Here are 7 tips if you want to plan a staff development day by yourself:
Tip #1: Pick a venue that gets people out of their everyday work location. Exposing your team to new experiences by taking them outside of an office setting will encourage them to think outside of their normal routine. Make sure the place is setup for comfort, play, and learning. The day can be 4 hours or 8 hours, but we tend to see the 8 hour sessions be most effective. You should plan to have breakfast, drinks, snacks and lunch delivered.
Tip #2: Set the stage by letting everyone know what to expect for the day. An ice breaker activity at this point will facilitate conversation and allow colleagues to get to know each other better.
Tip #3: Have an activity that allows employees to discuss the company’s strengths and weaknesses. Give everyone a chance to contribute their thoughts. Then lead an activity that takes the brainstorming ideas to form action items that the company can implement. This way everyone feels like they have a part in shaping the business direction.
Tip #4: Mix up activities with presentations. The presentations can be a “how to” topic or a motivational topic. For an 8 hour day, we suggest you incorporate one in the morning and another presentation at the end of the day so everyone leaves the session with renewed energy and motivation.

Tip #5: Incorporate some playtime into the day. It’s a great way to review your customer service manual in a fun way. Fun always leads to long lasting learning and retention.
Tip #6: Incorporate team presentations. Break up the group into smaller teams to teach the rest of the employees something important. You could use this to reinforce your company core values. Core values are extremely important for an organization to define to develop culture, brand and business strategies. They form the foundation on which we conduct ourselves, and perform work. Breaking down your team into groups to define what your company’s core values mean to them, and how they apply them to their work is a great team building activity. It requires coworkers to work together and promotes creativity, while acknowledging your businesses core values which is important as your company grows.
Tip #7: Plan an exercise that strengthens communication among employees. Have group exercises where everyone learns how to talk and how “not” to talk with each other. Give people a platform to voice their opinion and air out any issues. We find that once people are aware of each other’s communication skills, there is better collaboration and communication within the office.
Working together as a group ignites creativity and innovation, all of which are great qualities to bring back to the workplace after a staff development day.
